Used to “prevent soiling” of the upholstery fabric! I have a ton of these. My grandmother made them. This one a heavier crochet than most. Guess I could put it under a lamp. I have dyed some in tea and made a pillow out of them, stitching them onto a velveteen rectangle and backing.

Cheated and photographed this with my phone using the "silver" filter.
